Umbilical Cord Blood saving lives of Cancer patient

Scientist have made a major breakthrough in cancer treatment, when doctors used the umbilical cord blood of a new born to save the life of cancer patients.
The umbilical-cord-blood treatment could make a huge difference in the way that several types of cancer are treated worldwide. Cancer treatments using these transplants have been successful in treating blood cancers such as leukemia.
Umbilical-cord-blood, which would have been thrown away, is now saving a cancer patient’s life.
Cord blood cell treatment has been an ongoing research, but such significant clinical benefits have never been seen before. The research at the Cancer Center was different this time, due to the fact that there were noticeable results in their efforts to decrease the time patients go without white blood cells.
“We’ve definitively shown that we can do this – that we can manipulate cells in the laboratory, infuse them in patients and actually see some benefit in terms of early recovery of white cells. We cut the time almost in half of recovery of white blood cells.”
Patients involved in the cancer research ranged in age from 3 and 43, the hope is that these transplants’ are just the beginning of a less painful treatment, which will have an end result of patients that are cancer free.
Improvements’ that took 4 weeks in the past now takes 14 days, while using the umbilical-cord-blood transplants 7 of 10 patients survived without any evidence of cancer.
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is hopeful that in the near future when a child is born another person’s life can be saved with the use of the umbilical-cord-blood transplants.
